MLB Somos celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with authentic food during the 7th inning stretch at the Commissioner's Office, and finished the night with dance lessons in Bachata, Merengue and salsa.
Allyship is a vital strategic tool employed by individuals to actively collaborate, support and advocate for justice and equity in the workplace. It involves fostering personal relationships and engaging in public acts of sponsorship. Allies work towards systemic improvements in workplace policies, practices and culture. Allyship should be practiced by everyone at all levels in order to continue to push diversity, equity and inclusion forward.
INCLUSION
The essence of baseball -- a sport cherished by many -- is profoundly shaped by the power of inclusion. Without this crucial element, the beloved landscape of baseball we all hold close to our hearts would undergo a significant transformation. The inclusion of individuals from all walks of life has been the catalyst for our enduring impact, not only on the field but also behind the scenes. Embracing diversity has allowed us to harness a wide range of talents and perspectives, creating a dynamic and resilient baseball community. From players to coaches, from fans to administrators, the spirit of inclusion strengthens the very fabric of our sport, ensuring that baseball remains a source of joy, unity and inspiration for all. In every swing of the bat and every cheer from the stands, we celebrate the inclusive spirit that defines the heart and soul of baseball.
EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUPS
MLB’s Employee Resource Groups are voluntary, employee-led groups whose aim is to foster a sense of camaraderie, community and learning, alongside a diverse and inclusive workplace that aligns with the values of our sport. ERGs are part of our commitment to create an inclusive workplace and are open to all employees.
AROUND THE BIG LEAGUES
At Major League Baseball we have a variety of initiatives dedicated to advancing our commitment to DEI. From community outreach programs to initiatives promoting inclusion and diversity, we showcase a range of activities that demonstrate our ongoing efforts to make a positive impact.
During 2023 All-Star Week, the DEI department hosted a series of "Unfiltered" conversations. The first of the 2023 series featured Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, and Kerry Yo Nakagawa, Director of the Nisei Baseball Research Project, to discuss how African American and Asian American players and coaches impacted the sport of baseball, inspired nations and thrilled MLB fans throughout the ages. Other "Unfiltered" series discussions included topics such as the journey of Asian legends of MLB, Seattle Mariners legends and Women in Sports.
On Oct. 19, 2023, DEI led an effort spanning the Commissioner's Office and Major and Minor League Clubs, uniting to turn everything purple and demonstrate solidarity with LGBTQ+ youth.
The first annual Swingman Classic was held during 2023 All-Star Weekend, and MLB's DEI department donated two checks in the amount of $15,000 to UNCF Seattle and NPHC Seattle, two organizations that contribute to financing the education of Black students in greater Seattle.
In April 2023, Major League Baseball visited the Black Sports Business Symposium. BlackSportsBiz functions as a hub for talent acquisition, engagement and the advancement of Black talent in professional sports. It encompassed various levels of careers within leagues, teams, agencies and more. During the symposium, MLB employees participated in panels, a career fair and meaningful conversations with prospective talent.
Major League Baseball attended the 2023 Grace Hopper Conference in Orlando, Fla. The Grace Hopper Conference is organized by the AnitaB.org organization, which works to advance women in technology and promote gender diversity in the tech industry. During the conference, MLB employees and recruiters met with conference attendees, and promoted jobs for women in tech at MLB.
During Major League Baseball's 2023 Fall Business Meetings, DEI hosted Women in Baseball, which featured round-table discussions, powerful addresses and a reception that celebrated the work of women in baseball. The event introduced them to new professional relationships, and provided once-in-a-lifetime career development opportunities.
On Nov. 13, 2023, the MLB Asian ERG and DEI Department partnered together to host a speaker panel and networking event to celebrate Diwali (otherwise known as the 'Festival of Lights'). We learned from South Asian executives at MLB about their cultural traditions and their MLB careers, and networked with MLB colleagues, external partners and enjoyed delicious South Asian food.
